California will make it illegal for social media platforms to knowingly provide addictive feeds to children without parental consent beginning in 2027 under a new law​ Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Friday.

Senate Bill 976 could inspire legal action by social media companies, which argued the legislation 'unconstitutionally burdens' access to content.

California is on the verge of legalizing cannabis cafes, where people can legally smoke weed and eat food inside specialty licensed lounges. Lawmakers have already approved a bill legalizing the cafes and business owners are now waiting to see if Gov. Gavin Newsom will give final approval to the plan.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law Friday that clamps down on addictive social media targeted at young people. The legislation limits how and when social media companies can reach out to minors through notifications or other addictive material without their parents’ consent.
